I spent the day last week calling on business owners in Alstonville and Ballina.

Again and again I heard the same story.

• Business is quiet.
• The economy is 'going south' fast.
• Prices are rising.
• People don't want to spend their money

I have a few suggestions:

1. Now more than ever, you need to make your marketing dollars count. If you don't have a marketing plan, get one and start tracking and measuring the results of every dollar you spend on advertising.
2. You and Your staff need to be friendly. Some of the businesses that I called upon had exceptionally friendly staff. Others could have easily qualified for the 'Grouch of the Year' Award.
3. Get online fast and do it right. Your prospects are already using the Internet. Ignore that and you could risk going the way of the dinosaurs.
4. Focus on giving truly EXCEPTIONAL customer service. Now is not the time to be complacent - you need to make a heart felt committment to giving your clients the best possible service, for the best possible price with the least amount of stress and interruption.
5. Network. Businesses that take the time to network with other business owners generally do better than those who dont..
